BC Community Alliance and Safe School Hub Inc. Launch Family Services Program to Support Families Confronting Racism in Schools

VANCOUVER, BC – June 1st, 2025 – The BC Community Alliance (BCCA), in partnership with Safe School Hub Inc., is proud to announce the official launch of its Family Services Program, a province-wide initiative designed to support families, particularly Black families and those from racialised communities, navigating racism and harm in British Columbia’s school systems.

This is funded by NBA Foundation who has supported our support for Student Learning Program for two years, this program will be integrated into Safe School Hub Inc. This is also funded by Black Business Iniaitive who funded the BC Racism Tracker and Anti-Racism Videos and the infrastructure of the tool. This is also funded in part the Foundation for Black Communities and Government of Canada. We would like to thank the City of Vancouver for providing BCCA Capacity support to ensure sustainability across the organization.

At the centre of this initiative is the Safe School Hub, a real-time digital platform that empowers students, caregivers, and educators to document, track, and respond to incidents of racism and school-based harm as they happen. The app is now available for use across British Columbia, with scalable features to expand across Canada and other Commonwealth nations.

In the past year alone, the Safe School Hub has received 15 families’ reports and will be working with the families to address racism, offering a digital lifeline in schools where traditional systems have failed. This includes:

  • Crisis response for families in urgent need

  • Legal referrals and rights education

  • Culturally grounded mental health support

  • Long-term coaching and advocacy for navigating school processes

The program’s impact is backed by data:
Over 110 Black youth have already been served through BCCA’s broader education programs, with 83.3% of students reporting feeling more supported in their academic and emotional well-being.

“Our goal is to turn every report into a response and every experience into evidence for change,” said Brian Seremba, Co-Founder of BCCA and Founder of Safe School Hub Inc. It’s a tool for family resilience and policy accountability.”

To strengthen family leadership, BCCA also launched the Parent and Caregiver Network for Racial Justice (PCNRJ), a community advisory council drawn from BCCA’s 2,700+ member base. The PCNRJ works in coordination with the District Student Council, an intergenerational student-led body shaping district-level advocacy, curriculum reform, and anti-racism accountability measures.

“This work makes sure no student or family has to face injustice alone,” said Ayah Has, Co-Director of the District Student Council. “It gives us the tools to speak up, to be heard, and to lead the change ourselves.”

Together, these programs form a family-first, youth-powered infrastructure for addressing school-based racism and strengthening system-wide responsiveness.

The Safe School Hub Family Services Program will be live in the coming days across BC with future plans to include multilingual app versions, national partnerships, and the introduction of a pay-what-you-can credits model, ensuring long-term sustainability and accessibility for all. The price of a coffee.
