How the Supports for Student Learning Program (SSLP) Helped Iftu Abdo Achieve Her Dreams
Every success story begins with an opportunity. For Iftu Abdo, that opportunity came through the BCCA Supports for Student Learning Program (SSLP); a program that provides mentorship, academic support, and scholarship opportunities to Black youth in BC. Today, we celebrate her incredible achievement as a recipient of the RBC Scholarship Award and her journey toward a bright future in business and advocacy.
Finding a Space to Grow and Belong
For Iftu, discovering SSLP was a game-changer. “Before SSLP, I had never come across a program tailored to the unique experiences and challenges Black students face,” she shared. “I often felt there weren’t enough spaces that catered to my needs or provided guidance for my future. SSLP gave me that opportunity, and I am incredibly grateful for it.”
Through workshops on financial literacy and career development, one-on-one mentorship, and academic tutoring, Iftu found a supportive community that helped her build confidence and set goals for the future.
Lessons That Last a Lifetime
One of the most impactful moments in Iftu’s SSLP journey came through mentorship. “My mentor taught me the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone in order to grow,” she said. “I learned that sometimes, feeling uncomfortable means you are on the right path. Growth does not happen when you stay in the same place.”
This lesson has shaped Iftu’s approach to new opportunities, helping her embrace challenges with resilience and determination.
Winning the RBC Scholarship: A Milestone Moment
Receiving the RBC Scholarship Award was a defining moment for Iftu. “When I first applied, I had doubts about whether I would be selected, but receiving the email congratulating me was truly surreal,” she recalled.
Beyond financial relief, the scholarship served as validation of her hard work and dedication. It also reinforced her commitment to giving back to the community that has supported her.
Looking to the Future: A Vision for Change
Now, Iftu is preparing for the next chapter of her journey; pursuing her undergraduate degree at UBC Sauder School of Business. With a passion for business and community advocacy, she envisions using her education to empower underrepresented groups and create opportunities for those facing systemic barriers.
“SSLP has helped prepare me for this journey, and I’m excited for what lies ahead,” she said.
