A Legal System That Reflects Us: Have Your Voice Heard

A Legal System That Reflects Us: Have Your Voice Heard

At BC Community Alliance (BCCA), our work is rooted in advocacy, equity, and empowering Black communities to build systems that serve and protect us. We are proud to partner with the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers (CABL), Safe School Hub Inc., Royals Event Community Center and Sovereign Creatives to host an important series of community consultations on the future of legal services for Black communities in British Columbia.

These consultations, generously supported by the Law Foundation of British Columbia, are the first step in shaping an independent, Black-led legal clinic in the province. A clinic for us, by us that understands the cultural nuances, systemic barriers, and day-to-day realities we face.

🧭 Why This Matters

The justice system in BC has long neglected and underserved Black communities. Many face barriers ranging from discrimination to a lack of culturally safe legal support. Whether it’s navigating housing issues, employment disputes, immigration concerns, or interacting with police and institutions, the stakes are often high and the pathways unclear.

This initiative begins with listening—really listening—to the lived experiences of Black individuals, families, and communities across the Lower Mainland.

🫶 Who Should Attend?

These consultations are open to anyone who identifies as Black or whose ancestry originates from the Black racial groups of Africa, especially those with experiences trying to access legal services in BC. We also welcome legal service providers, frontline staff, and community advocates who work closely with Black clients.

🗣️ What to Expect

Participants will be asked to share their experiences navigating legal systems in BC. What worked? What didn’t? What changes are needed?

Your input will directly inform how a future Black legal clinic operates—what services it offers, how it supports community members, and how it ensures accountability and care.

Refreshments will be served at each session.
ASL interpretation and transit support will be available.
Additional accessibility needs can be shared during registration or by emailing: info@yanfullaw.com

🙏 Thank You

We extend our deepest thanks to the Law Foundation of British Columbia for funding this crucial initiative, and to our partners at CABL, Safe School Hub, and Sovereign Creatives for their commitment to justice.

Together, we are planting the seeds for a new legal future—rooted in equity, dignity, and the lived realities of Black British Columbians.
